Copper Products
Will my copper product from Novatto change color over time?
Yes. Copper is a living material and will naturally develop a patina. It may darken or change tone depending on use and environment. This is normal and part of copper’s character and appeal.
What is patina or a “living finish”?
Patina is the naturally developed finish that forms on copper over time. It creates a rich, weathered look with a mix of lighter and darker tones and acts as a protective layer. Certain chemicals—such as acids, bleach, harsh cleaners, and drain cleaners—can strip the patina and temporarily brighten the copper. Over time, the patina will usually rebuild and even out again.
Why are copper tubs considered “good for you”?
Copper has natural antimicrobial properties and can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and microorganisms. Copper tubs also retain heat well, helping bath water stay warmer longer, which can make for a more comfortable, relaxing soak.
How can I protect my copper tub or sink from water spots and mineral deposits?
In areas with hard water or high mineral content, dry the surface with a soft cloth after each use to help prevent spotting and buildup. For added protection, apply a wax specifically designed for copper on a regular basis (for example, monthly or as recommended by the product manufacturer).
What differences should I expect in handmade copper sinks?
Each copper sink is handmade from natural copper, so variations in size, color, and texture are common. A small size tolerance (around 1/2 inch) is expected and is not considered a defect.
Do your copper sinks have overflow holes?
No. Novatto copper sinks do not include overflow holes.
What gauge of copper is used in Novatto copper sinks?
Most Novatto copper sinks are made from thick, durable copper, typically 16 gauge for kitchen, bar, and prep sinks, with select bathroom undermounts made from 18 gauge copper. Check your specific product details for exact specifications.
Are clips included with my copper undermount sink?
Novatto typically does not include sink clips with copper undermount sinks, as installation methods can vary. Your professional installer may provide the appropriate clips or mounting hardware based on your countertop and installation style.
Faucets
Are replacement parts available for my faucet?
Yes. We carry replacement parts for all Novatto faucets. When the issue is covered under warranty, eligible parts are available at no charge to the original purchaser.
Do your faucets have a warranty?
Yes. All Novatto faucets carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty, with specific terms for finishes and internal components as outlined in our warranty policy.
What type of cartridge does the faucet use?
All Novatto faucets use a high-pressure ceramic cartridge designed for smooth operation and long-lasting performance.
How far back from the edge of the sink should the faucet hole be drilled?
This depends on the faucet model and sink configuration. A distance of about 1–3 inches from the edge of the sink is common. Always verify the faucet reach and handle clearance before drilling.
Where should the faucet hole be placed?
Placement is often a matter of preference, but most faucets are centered to the sink. Ensure there is enough space between the faucet and backsplash so the handle can move freely and the area can be cleaned easily.
Granite Composite Sinks
What’s the price difference between a composite granite and natural granite sink?
A natural granite sink can cost up to ten times more than a granite composite sink. Natural granite also has more variation in color and texture and generally requires more maintenance than a composite granite sink.
How long will my granite composite sink last?
With normal use and proper care, composite granite sinks can last for decades. Use mild dish soap and warm water for cleaning and avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners. Clean up stains like wine, coffee, or tomato sauce promptly, and avoid placing very hot pots or pans directly in the sink.
Should I hire or consult a professional?
Yes, it’s highly recommended. Granite composite sinks can weigh 30–50 pounds or more, and once you add water, dishes, and pots, the load increases further. Custom cabinetry or extra reinforcement may be required. Providing your cabinet maker with the actual sink helps ensure a safe and custom fit.
Is there a template for my composite sink?
A template is usually provided, but we still recommend using the actual sink for the cutout. Make sure there is adequate space behind the sink for the faucet and backsplash, and confirm that faucet handles and the spout have full range of motion.
Porcelain & Ceramic Sinks
Do I need to seal my porcelain sink? Why?
Yes. A sealer helps protect the surface from dirt, oil, minerals, and stains. We recommend using a product such as Novatto’s Glacier Ice Faucet & Sink Restorer and Cleaning Kit with Sealer. Make sure the sink is completely clean before sealing, then re-seal every 1–2 years to keep it looking its best.
Is there a difference between ceramic and porcelain sinks?
Ceramic is a broad term for materials made by heating clay in a kiln. Porcelain is a type of ceramic fired at a much higher temperature (about 2,200–2,600°F), which makes it denser and stronger. Functionally, both are durable options; porcelain is simply a harder, more refined ceramic.
Is there a template for my ceramic or porcelain sink?
A template is usually included with your sink. Always compare the template to the actual sink before cutting. Make sure there is enough space for the faucet and backsplash, and that faucet handles and the spout have full range of motion. If your template is missing, contact support@novatto.com.
Should I hire or consult a professional to install the sink?
We recommend it. A professional has installed many sinks and can ensure a proper fit, leak-free connections, and safe support. Some sinks may require custom cabinetry or reinforcement, so experienced help can prevent costly mistakes.
Shower Systems
When installing a new shower system, can I reuse my existing pipes and fixtures?
Sometimes. It depends on the compatibility of your existing plumbing and fixtures with the new shower system. Always compare specifications and check for wear or damage before reusing any components.
Do I need to hire a professional to install the shower system?
Not always, but it is often beneficial. If you have limited plumbing experience or the system is more complex, a professional can ensure proper installation, help prevent leaks, and address any hidden issues in your plumbing.
Can I install the shower system myself?
Some systems are suitable for skilled DIYers, while others require more advanced plumbing knowledge. Honestly assess your own abilities and comfort level. If you are unsure, consult or hire a licensed plumber.
Do I need to change my existing plumbing to install a new shower system?
It depends on your current setup and the requirements of the new system. You may need to add or reroute pipes, change valves, or adjust water pressure to ensure proper performance. When in doubt, have a professional review your plumbing.
How should I care for my shower system?
For best results, clean the shower system after installation and apply a compatible sealer, such as Glacier Ice, to help reduce hard water spots and mineral buildup. For routine cleaning, use mild soap and water with a soft cloth or sponge, then rinse and dry. Avoid abrasive cleaners and products containing ammonia, bleach, acids, waxes, alcohol, or solvents.
Stainless Steel Sinks
How do I keep my stainless steel sink from becoming stained or discolored?
Stainless steel will react to how it’s used and to its environment. Certain foods, beverages, and cleaning agents can cause staining or discoloration if left on the surface for long periods. Rinse the sink after use and dry it to help prevent water spots and chemical buildup.
What gauge is my Novatto stainless steel sink?
Novatto kitchen stainless steel sinks are made from 304 (18/8) stainless with a 16 or 18 gauge thickness, providing strength, durability, and excellent corrosion resistance.
Are there clips included with my stainless steel sink?
Yes. Novatto provides sink clips, and we recommend using all of them to securely fasten your sink to the countertop.
My sink is showing scratches. How can I prevent and remove them?
To help prevent scratches, use sink accessories such as bottom grids and rinse baskets to shield the surface. When cleaning, always work with the grain of the steel. Minor scratches can often be reduced with a paste of baking soda and water applied with a soft cloth. For deeper scratches, use a dedicated stainless steel scratch-removal product or fine-grit abrasive, always following the direction of the grain.
Stone Sinks
Considering these are handmade and from natural stone, what differences should I expect?
Each stone sink is hand-carved from natural stone, so variations in color, veining, texture, and size are normal. Stones like onyx and marble can vary more than granite or travertine. These distinctions make each sink unique and are not considered defects.
Do I need to seal my stone sink?
Yes. Most natural stone is porous to some degree, so sealing helps protect against stains and damage from everyday use. Your sink may come with a Glacier Ice sealer, which should be applied to a clean surface. Reapply every 1–2 years, or as needed, to maintain protection and appearance.
Is there a template for my stone sink?
Because these sinks are handcrafted, their dimensions can vary slightly. Instead of relying on a template, we recommend using the actual sink to mark and cut the countertop. Also ensure there is adequate space for your faucet and backsplash and full range of motion for faucet handles and spout.
Should I hire or consult a professional?
Yes, especially for heavier stone sinks. Some natural granite sinks can weigh hundreds of pounds and may require custom cabinetry and additional reinforcement. Providing your cabinet maker or installer with the actual sink helps ensure a safe, proper fit and avoids structural issues.
What is the best way to care for my stone vessel?
The best care is to keep it sealed and clean. Use Novatto’s Glacier Ice Faucet & Sink Restorer and Cleaner with Sealer Kit or a compatible stone-safe cleaner and sealer. For daily care, use mild soap and water and avoid harsh, acidic, or abrasive cleaners that can etch or dull the surface.
Toilets
Can I fit a new toilet to an old soil pipe?
In many cases, yes—as long as the existing soil pipe is in good condition and a standard size. Always inspect the pipe and replace it if it’s damaged, corroded, or non-standard.
Should I hire or consult a professional to install my toilet?
We recommend it. A professional plumber has the experience to ensure a proper seal, correct flange height, and leak-free installation. This is especially important if your bathroom floor has been changed or raised since the original toilet was installed.
Does my toilet come with a flange, or can I reuse the old one?
New toilets typically do not include a floor flange, as it is usually part of the plumbing on the floor. The old flange and bolts can sometimes be reused if they are in good condition. Novatto toilets include new bolts. If the flange is cracked or damaged, it should be replaced with a compatible one.
Should I caulk around the base of my new toilet?
We suggest waiting initially. If a leak occurs and the base is fully caulked, water can become trapped under the toilet and damage your floor. Once you’re confident everything is functioning correctly, you may add caulk if desired.
How long does it take to install a toilet?
This depends on your experience level and whether any unexpected issues arise. For many DIYers, installing a toilet can take around 2–4 hours if everything goes smoothly.
Vanities
The vanity seems to wobble. How do we fix this?
Most vanities include adjustable levelers on the bottom of each foot to accommodate uneven floors. Adjust these until the vanity is level and stable.
What is the best way to attach the countertop?
For Novatto vanities, the countertop is typically secured using a suitable adhesive at key contact points (often the four corners). Always follow both the vanity and countertop manufacturer’s recommendations for installation.
What is the best way to attach the backsplash?
Apply adhesive along the bottom of the backsplash where it meets the countertop, press it into place, and once secure you may seal along the wall edge if desired for a finished look.
Can I order custom sizes or finishes?
Currently, we offer vanities in select sizes and finishes. For large quantity or project orders, custom sizes or styles may be possible. Please contact sales@novatto.com for more information and pricing.
Can I order the cabinet only and use my own top?
Yes. You can purchase the cabinet only and pair it with your own countertop if you prefer a different material or color.
Can I use a vessel sink, faucet, or drain from another vendor?
Yes, as long as the components are compatible with standard sizes. Our pre-drilled holes are generally sized for standard vessel sink drains (around 1.625") and faucet holes (around 1.5"). Always confirm each component’s specifications before installation.
What is the best way to care for the counter, sink, and cabinet?
Use mild soap and water or a non-abrasive cleaner for everyday cleaning. Novatto’s Glacier Ice Cleaner and Restorer can provide a deeper clean and protective seal on many surfaces such as glass, ceramic, and stone. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasives, especially on wood surfaces.
What is FSC certified wood?
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood comes from responsibly managed forests that meet strict environmental and social standards. It is an eco-friendly, sustainable choice for wood products.
